18-1 The Goal – Pursuit of the 2020 CrossFit Games

I am attempting to become one of the 20 fittest 60+ year old men in the world by the summer of 2020. I am currently 58 years old and have been chasing this goal for the past year. To make it, I have to qualify for a spot in the CrossFit Games Masters division to be held in the summer of 2020. That’s the GOAL!

The CrossFit franchise hosts an annual fitness test known as the CrossFit Games and each summer they invite the fittest men and women from around the world to come to Madison Wisconsin to compete for the title of “Fittest on Earth”. They split competitors by age group starting at age 35 into 5 year increments (35-39, 40-44, etc.) so that athletes compete with like-aged competitors. The oldest age grouping is 60+ and so contains everyone who is 60 years old or older as of the competition date, (late July, early August time frame). In the summer of 2020 I will be 60 years old and my goal is to earn one of the 20 spots to the CrossFit Games for my age group.

In order the qualify for the CrossFit Games there are two multi-day tests of fitness that athletes have to compete in. These are designed to test fitness in specific ways including functional strength, conditioning and bodyweight skilled movements. The initial competition is the CrossFit Open which is held in March and encompasses five proscribed workouts (one per week) that are announced on Thursday and must be completed and submitted by the end of the following Monday. In order to advance to the next level, the “Online Qualifier”, Masters Athletes must be one of the top 200 finishers in their age group across the sum of the five workouts proscribed in the CrossFit Open. The top 200 athletes then compete in the Online Qualifier in April where they are given four new workouts and must complete all of these workouts within the next four days. The athletes that score in the top 20 of those 200 athletes based on these four workouts are then invited to the CrossFit Games for that summer in Madison.

This blog is about that journey, my workouts, nutrition and recovery techniques as I try to become one of the 20 fittest 60+ year old men on earth.
